JLSP Hosts Third Thursday Family Nights with the Dayton’s Bluff Recreation Center

Contributed by Ginger Carroll, Director of Community Outreach

Every third Thursday of the month, the Junior League of Saint Paul hosts a family night at Dayton’s Bluff Recreation Center. These nights focus on building bonds between children and caregivers by reading and playing together. JLSP volunteers serve food and then play games or read with the children and caregivers.

The Junior League of Saint Paul is dedicated to providing experiences for children to develop skills for success through their Building Bonds Through Reading and Play initiative. Children who are read to regularly learn to read more quickly and easily. Reading to children encourages language development, listening skills and a longer attention span.

Play is also critical to raising successful children and building happy families. Play stimulates brain growth, lays the foundation for learning, and provides a key opportunity for positive social interaction. Furthermore, researchers have found that parents who felt their child was difficult or perceived a lack of bonding between parent and child may be more likely to abuse their children. Play provides the positive bonding experience required to help prevent this abuse.

Through play, children develop crucial social, language and vocabulary, creativity, reasoning, problem solving, memory and cognitive skills. Play also leads to improved self-confidence, trust and communication skills. Ultimately, play builds strong children, and it also builds strong families. By playing and reading together, parents and children have fun, get to know one another, build connections and create memories.

The Junior League of Saint Paul recognizes that today’s families are very busy and may not have enough opportunity to read and play regularly with each other. Anyone who would like to have that time provided for them is invited to join the Junior League of Saint Paul and the Dayton’s Bluff Recreation Center staff for a Third Thursday Family Night from 6pm – 8pm.
